listen to what she said. >> this is like watergate. only now in cyber time. breaking in to the democratic national committee physically or into electronic files to withdraw information to be used for political purposes. it is stunning that we are facing this and especially from a foreign power. >> eric, hillary clinton seems to be using the press on the plane to her advantage. she's able to actually, you know, defend herself with numerous points of what's going on in the campaign. >> that's right. she has gone so many months without engaging with te press in an open forum like this. she has done interviews. she met with local reporters and with magazines that are taking a friendly bend. she hasn't done a gaggle like

that, right? a meeting with a broad group of reporters to throw anything at her. now she is, she is having an opportunity to push back against some of the story lines that festered through the month of august when she was really focused on fund raising. she raised $140 million during the month. so, yeah. the watergate thing got a lot of headlines. what's missing is the involvement of the president, of course. there's not richard nixon ordering russia to infiltrate the dnc. but she is able to push a story line that had sort of not been picked up on when it was her campaign surrogates. >> there may be a president involved. just not a u.s. president. it could be vladimir putin. focus on clinton and the clinton foundation. now a lot of focus on donald trump for a political donation.

$25,000. the trump foundation, which is interesting in and of itself. charities cannot give to politicians. $25,000 the foundation gave to the attorney general of florida pam bondi at the time they were considering the lawsuit over trump university. listen to what trump said. >> i never spoke to her. first, she is beyond reproach. fine person. never spoke to her about it at all. many attorney generals turned that case down. i'll win that case in court. i never spoke to her about it. >> this is a case where money was given while an attorney general was decides something directly related to trump there. does this smell like the appearance of conflict? >> it sure looks like pay to play. but the reason this is damaging for trump isn't so much what it says about him, right? the fact that he threw a charitable foundation gave

$25,000 to the attorney general of florida who did not prosecute the trump university case. he is trying to argue hillary clinton is too accessible to moneyed interests and to people and corporations that can pay for access through the clinton foundation. and yet, here's a pretty clear example of the same sort of thing on trump's side. it raises the rebuttal to any clinton foundation criticism. what about that donation to pam bondi? what about trump university? that is why this is damaging to trump. he has been making the same point about hillary clinton and this is a rather easy one to understand. trump was fined. he paid $2,500 to the irs. that's why this is a problem. >> and speaking of rebuttals. we saw joe biden on the campaign trail yesterday laboring on labor day defending hillary clinton on her trust issues that

she has with voters. listen to what he said. >> hillary knows it's a problem. she's trying to figure out how to remedy it. my advice is to talk about what you care about. talk about it with passion. and people will see through it. >> this is an ongoing theme with hillary clinton. that trust issue that voters have with her. is this just the way to handle it? just open it up and be honest about the issues she has? is the campaign making head way on this? >> i think clinton herself is quite a bit more skeptical than that. she thinks that there's not a ton to gain by being open and honest with the press and with everybody else. she feels like she's tried that over three decades in public life. it just hasn't worked out for her. that's joe biden offering a glimpse of what he would have

been like as a presidential candidate. clinton will have to play a more public role than we have seen in the past few weeks. the first debate coming up september 26th where she will be challenged by a moderator and by donald trump on a lot of this stuff. tough questions are coming, but really remains to be seen over the coming days whether hillary clinton getting on the press plane and taking questions will be a regular occurrence or just a one or two time to keep trump from being able to say it has been 300 days since she held a conference. >> what about trump? can you trust him to be commander in chief? she will focus on national security. clinton has a new ad out. let's play a little clip of the ad. >> i know more about isis than

the first time really about the political donation he made over the last year. this is fascinating. so much has been made about the clinton foundation alleged pay to play. donald trump's charity gave $25,000 to a committee to pam bondi, the attorney general of florida, while her office was considering to join the lawsuit against trump university. they did not join that lawsuit. later, that donation violated all kinds of laws and rules and trump paid a fine. it is very, very interesting. this comes out. this is what donald trump said about it. >> i never spoke to her. first of all, she is beyond reproach. a fine person. never spoke to her about it at all. many of the attorney generals turned that case down because i'll win that case in court. many attorney generals throughout the country turned that case down. >> there are a lot of clinton defenders here. there is one guy who paid a fine for a donation. one guy who gave a donation that could be seen as pay to play

here. so why hasn't this been a bigger problem for trump? >> the difference is for trump, this is one instance we know about. this is a bad one. it's pretty clear. it looks a lot like bribery. but on the other hand, there is a constant stream of stories about the clinton foundation and various donors whether we are talking about individuals or corporations or corporations on behalf of individuals that have given and then gotten access to clinton or her aides during her time as secretary of state. and so this is the rebuttal. it is like, this, but donald trump got this and got caught and busted by the irs and had to pay a fine. it limits trump's ability to prosecute clinton over the clinton foundation stuff, but you are right. this hasn't gotten a ton of

attention on the trump side because in part it is because he is always in the middle of some form of controversy and the trump university news has been out for several months. >> all right. switching gears to hillary clinton. she did a lot of talking on the campaign trail yesterday. news flash. she's human. it is interesting she had a couple of coughing fits yesterday. it is interesting how she handled it. listen to this quick sound bite here. [ coughing vigorously ] >> every time i think about trump, i get allergic. >> and some are saying that was actually quite funny. her first unscripted joke that made people laugh. we had kellyanne conway tweeting must be allergic to media. we're all human.

we cough. it is building that persona for hillary that she is human. she can make a joke. she can roll with it. >> people close to hillary clinton have always said she is very warm and funny in person. but campaigning is not her strong suit. she always admitted she likes governing. doesn't really like campaigning. especially the part that involves dealing with the press. yeah, she doesn't have these moments very often. i thought the kellyanne conway response was funny, too, in part, because you read that and it almost reads like a message to the trump campaign like hey, stay on message. stay focused on hillary clinton here. don't evolve into conspiracy theories about her health. that's something that a lot of conservatives and trump supporters have been pushing lately despite. it was a funny moment and funny

the tragedies of the vietnam war. he is also making headlines with the president of philippines who says he regrets his comments and how it came across as attack on the president. we have michelle kosinski in laos. good morning. >> reporter: alison, it is difficult to overstate how unusual this is. you know, president obama tries to put the best face on these meetings as any leader would do. even with the glaring differences. you have another leader. the president of the philippines lashing out calling president obama a profane name to reporters and threatening to curse him further. this would have been their first meeting if president obama brought up the vigilante style killings during the philippines drug war that's going on right now. the white house canceled this straightaway. they said the comments indicated

this would not be a constructive meeting. and it would be a disservice to the filipino people to do this now. today, president duterte said he regrets his comments as a personal attack on president obama. he wants to meet with him at some point constructively in the future. for now, president obama is building that relationship starting with $90 million over the next three years to remove some 80 million unexploded bombs of the more than 270 million that the u.s. dropped on laos during the vietnam war. listen. >> i also know that the remnants of war continue to shatter lives here in laos. many of the bombs that were dropped were never exploded. over the years, thousands of laotians have been killed or injured. farmers tending their fields.

with russia and u.s. it would lead to cooperation on the battle field as well and coordinating the air campaigns. that is where the u.s. has the major issue. they still say the russian air strikes in syria are producing way too many civilian casualties. they want the russians to curb that quickly. the two sides have issues is which groups do you strike and which do you not? they are working together with al qaeda and some working with isis. some are vetted by the u.s. and are only opposed to bashar al assad and those should be left alone. there are a lot of technical details as both sides say. they seem to be quite major technical details that are in the way. you also have the issue of humanitarian access especially in aleppo, which john, is under siege again by bashar al assad forces. how do you get goods in there to
